When questions arise about the content of sacred texts such as the Ramayana, it is easy for the uninformed to be swayed by allegations and misconceptions. One such claim suggests the presence of bar girls and intoxication in the Ramayana, equating it to the moral degradation of society. Dr. Venkata Chaganti, a respected scholar and president of the Vedas World and Vedas Wiki at the University of Applied Vedic Sciences, takes a stand to clarify these unfounded accusations.
Dr. Chaganti emphasizes that many people have read and written about the Ramayana, each adding their interpretations or focusing on aspects they find most compelling, such as the heroism of Rama, the wisdom of Dasharatha, or the debates between Kaikayi and other characters. However, these interpretations do not detract from the core messages of the Ramayana about dharma (righteousness), artha (purpose), kama (desire), and moksha (liberation).
Addressing the specific claim about bar girls and intoxicants, Dr. Chaganti explains that ancient texts should not be misinterpreted to align with modern vices or misrepresented to degrade their value. According to him, such claims are made by those who either lack a thorough understanding of the Ramayana or have the intent to malign its teachings. The mention of Apsaras (celestial nymphs) in the text is in no way indicative of moral or societal decay but rather a part of the mythological storytelling typical of that era.
Furthermore, Dr. Chaganti invites critics to read the descriptions of Ayodhya and its people, where virtues like integrity, piety, and societal order are abundantly evident. The Ramayana, as penned by Valmiki, portrays an ideal society where the welfare of the people and righteousness prevails, far removed from the accusations of debauchery.
In conclusion, Dr. Chaganti’s clarification serves as a reminder that the Ramayana, much like any other epic, must be read and understood in its historical and cultural context. Misinterpretations and baseless accusations only serve to distract from the epic’s profound teachings on life, duty, and righteousness.
